Fish producers in the Philippines, particularly in Batangas and Pampanga, are facing a challenge of low demand for tilapia despite having an ample supply, even after recent typhoons. The farm-gate price of tilapia is lower than the production cost, and the retail price is also higher than imported fish like galunggong. Local fish farmers are appealing to the public to support local fish over imports and are urging the Department of Agriculture to stop its plan to import 60,000 metric tons of fish and instead support local producers.
