The National Institute of Fisheries Science is driving efforts to revitalize the ailing abalone farming industry in South Korea. This was demonstrated through a recent industry-government-research consultative body held in Wando, Jeollanam-do, aimed at enhancing industry competitiveness, resolving issues, and boosting international market presence. The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including institutes, cooperatives, and the Abalone Farming Industry Association, who focused on strategies for breeding superior varieties, advancing aquaculture technology, reducing mortality, improving distribution and processing, and expanding exports. With a history of significant growth from 20 tons in 2000 to 24,000 tons in 2022, the industry now faces challenges such as decreased seafood consumption, climate change impacts, and price fluctuations. This initiative underscores the institute's commitment to supporting fishermen and revitalizing the industry through collaborative efforts in research and policy making.
