(Pyeongchang=Yonhap News) Reporter Im Bo-yeon = Pyeongchang County is stepping forward as a central hub for the spread of regenerative organic farming, in collaboration with the government, businesses, and farmers.

On the 1st, at the Pyeongchang County Agricultural Technology Center, an "MOU for the establishment of a regenerative organic farming base" was signed with the Rural Development Administration National Institute of Agricultural Science, Orion, and Yukbaekmajigi Farm.

This agreement is being evaluated as a new public-private cooperation model aimed at addressing climate change and spreading sustainable agriculture.

Currently, about 70% of the 165 tons of green manure seeds distributed in the country rely on imports, and imported seeds are disinfected during quarantine, limiting their use in eco-friendly farming.

The Rural Development Administration plans to reduce the dependency on imports by developing and distributing domestic seeds, and to cultivate Pyeongchang County as a hub for the spread of regenerative organic farming in the Gangwon Province.

According to the agreement, a 2,000 m² green manure seed propagation facility will be established at Yukbaekmajigi Farm, which is located at an altitude of 1,250 meters.

Here, four types of domestic triticale and one type of alfalfa will be tested for winter survival, and based on this, full-scale seed propagation will be promoted from 2026.

Additionally, the National Institute of Agricultural Science and the Orion Potato Research Institute will verify the effects of using green manure on potatoes, a major crop in Pyeongchang, and conduct empirical research on the possibility of replacing chemical fertilizers.

Pyeongchang County plans to lead the actual spread of regenerative organic farming through support for agricultural machinery for operating the propagation facility, provision of region-specific cultivation techniques, and distribution of domestically produced green manure seeds to eco-friendly farms.

Vice Mayor Im Sung-won of Pyeongchang County said, "Based on the clean environment and agricultural competitiveness, we will spread the cooperation model created by the government, businesses, and farmers to increase farmers' income and regional competitiveness" and "We will do our best to establish Pyeongchang as a mecca for the spread of eco-friendly agriculture."
