The head of the National Food Agency in Indonesia, Arief Prasetyo Adi, addressed concerns from tofu and tempe producers about soybean scarcity, citing shipping disruptions as the cause and suggesting that the situation would improve by the end of December 2023 and January 2024. The Indonesian Soybean Importers Association confirmed plans to import over 200,000 tonnes of soybeans to address the shortage, as a lack of soybeans in various regions had caused around 30,000 tofu and tempe producers to cease production. A potential domino effect from attacks by Houthi militants on commercial ships in the Red Sea and Suez Canal was also suggested as contributing to the shortage, with officials seeking a clearer response from the government about the situation.
