Record high prices for bananas in Ukraine and Poland - we understand the reasons

According to EastFruit analysts, banana prices in Eastern Europe are currently at a record high for this period of the year. Although the rise above previous record price levels is relatively small, it has a negative impact on consumption prospects. “There are two main reasons for the rise in banana prices in Eastern Europe this year. The first is climate change, which has a negative impact on the volume of production of these fruits in Central American countries. As a result, the demand for bananas from Ecuador, which is the main supplier of bananas to Ukraine and other countries in the region, has increased sharply, leading to higher prices in Ecuador. The second reason is the relatively high prices for apples, which allows retail and wholesale trade to increase prices for bananas,” explains Andriy Yarmak, economist at the investment department of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
