In Ireland, the retail chain BWG Foods, which operates over 1,000 stores under various brands, has reported a significant shift in shopping habits during the first quarter of 2021, amid the ongoing health crisis. This shift has led to record-breaking sales in fresh produce, with a 18% increase in vegetable sales and a 6% rise in fruit sales compared to the same period in the previous year. The vegetable category saw particularly strong growth in the sales of peppers, potatoes, and carrots, with asparagus experiencing the most notable surge of 138%. Meanwhile, fruit sales were led by bananas, but strawberries and mandarins stood out for their exceptional growth of 25% and 65% respectively. John Moane, the Commercial Director of BWG Foods, highlighted this trend as an indication of consumers' increased focus on healthier food choices amid the pandemic.
