Recovery in EU pork production

In the first four months of this year, 74.85 million pigs were slaughtered in EU Member States. Slaughter weights were significantly higher, resulting in the amount of pork produced increasing by 3.7% to 6.95 million tonnes. In the Netherlands and Denmark, Eurostat reported increases of 2.8% each. The increase in slaughter volume in Denmark is striking, since almost 200,000 fewer pigs were slaughtered in this country than in the same period last year. However, increasing the slaughter weight by almost 6 kilograms resulted in a larger slaughter amount. Pork production increased mainly in Croatia: a growth of 12.8%, in Bulgaria production increased by 12.7%. Poland also saw a significant increase in slaughter volume of 10.9%, as did Hungary with 10.3%. There was also an increase in pork production in the other major producing countries.
