Russian farms are reviving flax cultivation

Cultivation and processing of flax in the Central Federal District is carried out by farms in the Smolensk and Yaroslavl regions. Russian farms are starting to return to flax cultivation. In 2025, 7.3 thousand hectares of flax were sown in the Smolensk region. Twenty farms grow the crop. Seven processing enterprises, the largest of which are "Russian Flax" and "Flax Manufacture Cooperative," produce cotton flax, long and short flax fiber, which they sell to Russian and Chinese factories for yarn production. The region has a breeding and seed production center for this crop, with another planned to be opened at the Smolensk Agricultural Academy in conjunction with the Belarusian Flax Institute. An investment project for the revival of flax processing at an old factory in Pochinkovsky District has been underway for the second year.
