Ecuador's banana industry, a significant contributor to the country's agricultural exports, is facing threats from drug trafficking groups. In response, the government and the Banana and Plantain Cluster of Ecuador have initiated the 'Safe Farms' plan to enhance security in banana and coffee plantations and ensure the safety of banana exports. The plan includes scanning 100% of export containers and implementing security protocols across the export chain. It also seeks to involve buyer markets like the European Union in sharing responsibility and addressing the issue as a public health crisis. The plan will also utilize Artificial Intelligence to monitor export systems and ensure the traceability of all actors in the export process.
