Greenhouse cultivation is expanding rapidly worldwide, especially in low- and middle-income countries, driven by socio-economic development and government support. A study by the University of Copenhagen using deep learning and satellite imagery reveals that greenhouses cover at least 1.3 million hectares globally, with China accounting for 60.4%. While greenhouses offer benefits like higher yields and efficient resource use, they also pose environmental and social challenges, including water overexploitation, soil degradation, plastic pollution, and poor working conditions. Researchers stress the need for political regulation and further research to ensure sustainable and socially responsible development, particularly in the Global South.
