During the holy month of Ramadan, over 1 million pieces of dates are consumed daily at the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, Saudi Arabia, as part of the iftar meals. The mosque provides 233,000 meals each day, with each individual receiving three to five pieces of dates. This tradition, which follows the example of the Prophet Mohammad, is due to the nourishing properties of dates. Saudi Arabia, which is self-sufficient in date production, produces 1.5 million tonnes annually and exported dates worth SR1.4 billion to 119 countries in 2022.
