Ukraine has seen a significant increase in shellfish exports in the first seven months of 2024, with a 50.4% rise to 704 tons, valued at $3.6 million, according to the State Customs Service. The primary importers were Lithuania, Spain, and Poland, accounting for 59%, 21.3%, and 8% of purchases respectively. Although imports also rose by 10.7% to 3.1 thousand tons, the country's shellfish market experienced a surplus due to increased domestic production. The main shellfish suppliers were China, France, and Chile, with China being the largest at 33.3%. The waters of southwestern Ukraine are being explored for mariculture potential to grow Mediterranean mussels, Pacific and European oysters.
