At the IFPA Southern Africa conference, Shubha Rawal, the head of sourcing at IG International in Navi Mumbai, highlighted the resilience of the Indian economy to price inflation and the shift towards fresh food post-Covid. She pointed out that consumers are spending more on fresh produce, with a notable increase in the consumption of avocados and berries. However, she suggested that the market could benefit from less complexity, as consumers in India do not yet distinguish between different apple varieties. Rawal used the analogy of a bamboo plant to emphasize the need for patience in building the South African fruit market in India. She also noted the growth of Quick Commerce in India, which allows for four-minute delivery of fresh produce, and the support of financial partners for these companies.
