A study by Agróptimum highlights Spain's potential to lead in Europe's pistachio industry, driven by a 3,000% increase in harvested area since 2013 in regions like Castilla-La Mancha and Andalusia. The report, which forecasts global pistachio consumption to surpass 976,000 tons, underscores the crop's profitability and sustainability, with potential higher profitability than annual crops despite higher initial costs. The study also points out the pistachio tree's resilience to climate change, droughts, and poor soils, and the benefits of technological advancements and intensive cultivation techniques for increased profitability. By 2040, the global pistachio cultivation area is projected to reach nearly 1.8 million hectares, with a production of over 1.6 million tons, offering a promising market for long-term profitability.
