The Spanish government is pleased with the outcomes of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) meeting in Limassol, Cyprus, where decisions were made to increase bigeye and swordfish catches for Spanish fleets. The Total Allowable Catch (TAC) for bigeye tuna has been raised to 73,000 tonnes, an increase of 11,000 tonnes from the previous one, effective from 2025. The EU has increased its quota, which is now to be distributed among participating fleets. The ban on fishing on fish concentration devices has been reduced from 72 to 45 days, favoring the purse seine sector. A new management procedure has been approved to improve the sustainability of the northern swordfish fishery. However, the Spanish government was unable to adopt a proposal for an obligation to land sharks with fins naturally attached due to opposition from other parties.
