Handong University and the International Corn Foundation, along with the US NGO NEI Foundation, have successfully grown super sweet corn in Afghanistan. The corn, developed by Dr. Kim Soon-kwon of the International Corn Foundation, was harvested from test cultivation in seven provinces across the country. The corn variety, which has a high sugar content and can be eaten raw, is a potential solution to hunger in the region. Dr. Kim's goal is to provide this corn to people in North Korea and elsewhere to alleviate hunger.
