Brazil: Sugar movement stands out again in the Port of Santos in January

Sugar was the highlight in cargo handling at the Port of Santos in January, with growth of 37.2%, totaling 1.2 million tons, compared to the same period in 2022. The commodity was the highlight among cargoes of exports, accompanied by corn, which also performed well, totaling 1.4 million, a growth of 43.2%. The performance of these loads increased the movement of solid bulk by 0.9%. The general movement in January reached 10.1 million tons, a reduction of 4.7% over the same month last year (10.6 million tons), period in which the historical record for January was registered. The drop was mainly determined by the 51% reduction in shipments to the soy complex and the 17.8% reduction in fertilizer shipments. Thus, January/2023 is the second best historical result for the first month of the year. Shipments reached 6.8 million tons, down 4%, while discharges totaled 3.4 million tons, down 6.1%.
