Mozambique is aiming to produce 210 thousand tons of sugar in the 2024-25 agricultural season, a slight increase from the previous season's production of 200 thousand tons. This is despite challenges such as climate change and a factory stoppage. The country has also been experiencing flooding and illegal sugar imports, which have reduced production and threatened the sector's contribution to the GDP and job creation. However, two sugar factories are investing in innovative processing techniques and are working to ensure there is no market harm. Rehabilitation of a plantation damaged in 2022 is underway, with the factory expected to resume activities in 2026.
