In Indonesia, sugarcane farmers, through the Indonesian People's Sugar Cane Farmers Association (APTRI), are urging the government to raise the Cost of Goods Sold (HPP) for sugar from IDR 12,500 to IDR 16,400 per kg, following the government's decision to increase the consumer sugar price. This request aims to protect farmers from being disadvantaged by the price hike, especially with the sugar cane crushing season approaching. Meanwhile, the government has temporarily raised the Highest Retail Price (HAP) for sugar to IDR 17,500/kg nationwide (IDR 18,500/kg in certain regions) from April 5 to May 31, 2024, to manage the expected surge in sugar consumption during Ramadan and Eid 2024. This marks the second HAP increase within a year, part of efforts to stabilize food supply and prices.
