In Rangpur, Bangladesh, farmers have significantly increased their sunflower cultivation beyond the set targets for the current Rabi season, covering 1,407 hectares of land, a 431% surge from the previous season's 265 hectares. This increase is attributed to the attractive market prices for sunflower and support from the government, including incentives and rehabilitation efforts following floods. The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) has been instrumental in inspiring farmers to try sunflower cultivation for the first time, particularly in flood-prone areas. With expectations high for a bumper crop, there is optimism for achieving self-reliance in edible oils by expanding sunflower farming in a changing climate.
