Mexico: Sustainable practices in arid areas of the country will improve agricultural production

In the framework of the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, it was reported that a viable response to this problem is the productive reconversion of crops that require less water. Through sustainable practices, better productive conditions can be created in the arid and semi-arid regions of the country, for the benefit of small-scale farmers and ranchers, said the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. He explained that the Government of Mexico promotes projects for the capture and use of water, such as the stimulation of rains, hydro-agricultural works, reforestation with native species, cultivation of agricultural products with demand in the market and value chains. The director general of the National Commission for Arid Zones (Conaza), Ramón Sandoval Noriega, pointed out that the Secretariat, in conjunction with this body, carries out work to reduce desertification and counteract its effects in the primary sector.
