Sweet chestnuts and rice from Ipsala now have geographical protection in the EU

Turkey's Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, İbrahim Yumaklı, announced that Bursa kestane şekeri (chestnut jam from Bursa) and İpsala pirinci (rice from İpsala) have received a geographical registration from the European Union (EU).

Minister Yumaklı also commented on the matter. He noted that the unique flavors from Turkey continue to cross borders. "With the registration of Bursa kestane şekeri and İpsala pirinci in the EU, the number of our registered products has increased to 42. The geographically protected products will add grace to the fertile lands of their regions."

İpsala pirinci - The rice is grown in the İpsala plain, which is a coastal plain influenced by the sea air and specific soil/salt characteristics. These local natural conditions affect the grain and the taste when cooked.

İpsala rice is described as large-grained, long, and with a "glassy/matte" (camsı ve mat) surface; the typical grain sizes are around 6.2–7.1 mm in length and 2.6–3.1 mm in width according to regional descriptions.
