Russian consumers are showing a growing preference for alternative root vegetables such as sweet potatoes and yams, leading to a significant increase in imports of these products. In 2020, sweet potato imports to Russia more than doubled, reaching 2,300 tons, a 120% increase compared to the previous year. Yam imports also saw a similar surge, increasing by 130% to 55 tons. Over the past five years, the import of sweet potatoes has increased 12-fold, and yam imports have increased 8-fold. Despite the country's potential as a major potato exporter, the demand for these alternative root vegetables has resulted in record low prices for potatoes.
