The National Agrarian Health Service in Chile has certified 241 production sites in Tacna, allowing for the commercialization of 11,149 tons of watermelons from September to March the following year. To obtain the certification, producers in the Valle Cinto and Mangollo sectors, as well as the districts of La Yarada, Los Palos and Calana, were required to implement Integrated Pest Management and meet other necessary technical conditions. Once certified, the watermelons are inspected in packing plants for quarantine pests and other contaminants before being marketed. Tacna is the leading producer and exporter of cucurbits in Chile.
