Taiwan Exports First Batch of Tilapia to Singapore, Aiming to Reduce Dependence on U.S. Market

Last week, Tainan City exported 5 containers of frozen tilapia to Singapore, including fish fillets, fish steaks, whole fish, and pre-prepared dishes, with Tainan City Mayor Huang Wei-zhe attending the celebration ceremony.

This order was jointly signed by Tainan Fishery Products Marketing and Singapore distributor Longrunn Food, with products to be sold in Singapore's food service market and supermarkets, with a total shipment value of approximately 600,000 New Taiwan dollars (18,500 USD).

"The United States, Canada, and the Middle East have traditionally been the main export markets for Taiwanese tilapia, but given the uncertain tariff policies under Trump's leadership, Singapore as an emerging open market has greatly boosted farmers' confidence," said Huang Wei-zhe.

Tainan region produces approximately 25,000 tons of tilapia annually, accounting for 45% of Taiwan's total production, primarily concentrated in areas such as Su Family, Madou, Xiaying, Liu Family, and Guantian.

In June this year, Taiwanese exhibitors first promoted tilapia at the Singapore Food Expo, after which a local distributor tasted the product and decided to place an order.

Tainan City has also invested in cold chain logistics and modern processing capacity, with its smart aquaculture industry center project having completed its first phase, with the second phase expected to be completed in August and operational in October, covering processing of tilapia, shellfish, oysters, shrimp, and other fish species.
