SEIDA and AMDT have initiated a campaign to boost local consumption of pigeon peas to 74,000 tonnes annually, aimed at improving public health and increasing farmers' income. The project will start as a pilot in six regions from March to June, focusing on research, education, and promotion of pigeon peas. Currently, the crop production is around 140,000-150,000 tonnes per year, but local consumption is only 11,000 tonnes, with over 60% reliant on foreign markets, primarily India. Pigeon peas are rich in essential nutrients, particularly protein, and can help combat malnutrition, with Nigeria banning export of 434 items, including rice, to prevent food scarcity and promote local consumption.
