Thailand's shrimp farming industry has seen a significant decline due to diseases, with the country's production expected to drop to 270,000 tons in 2022, down from over 600,000 tons at its peak in 2011. This has resulted in Thailand losing its position as the world's leading shrimp exporter, with India and Ecuador now taking the lead. In an effort to address the domestic supply shortage, the Thai government has imported around 10,000 tons of shrimp from Ecuador and India. The government and farmers have also set a minimum price for local shrimp to safeguard domestic production, but there are fears that importing more shrimp could drive down prices and force farmers to abandon the industry, hindering the recovery of domestic production. Thailand's long-term goal is to achieve an annual production of 400,000 tons, with the target set for no earlier than 2023.
