Nonthaburi, a central province in Thailand renowned for its high-quality durians, is facing a drastic decline in durian production due to extreme weather and climate change effects, including El Nino. This has led to durian trees not blooming or their flowers falling off prematurely, significantly reducing the output of premium durian varieties like Gan Yao and Jinzhen to about 10% of the previous year's levels. Consequently, durian prices have surged. Samrueng Sunthornsang, the chairman of the Nonthaburi Durian Protection and Restoration Association, has emphasized the severe impact of these environmental changes on the region's durian cultivation.
