Spain has emerged as the leading pork producer in the EU region, capitalizing on Germany's loss in the market due to African swine fever (ASF). The country's less stringent regulations on zoning and waste use have attracted significant investment from pork processing companies like Toennies, which is building a meat packing and slaughter plant in Calamocha, Spain. The facility is expected to create 1,000 jobs and slaughter 2.4 million animals annually. The majority of the production will be exported to Asia, particularly China, which is recovering from ASF-related losses and experiencing surging demand for imported pork.
