The Spanish dairy sector is facing challenges due to changing consumption patterns and an influx of low-value cheese imports from northern Europe, according to the National Federation of Dairy Industries (Fenil). In 2023, despite a slight increase in overall milk and dairy product sales, traditional Spanish cheese sales fell by over 3%. Fenil also noted that milk and dairy product imports reached a decade-high of 890,000 tons in 2023, posing a threat to the national cheese sector, which is largely made up of small and medium-sized family businesses.
