Malaysia: The end of chicken egg subsidies is being considered

PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) will review the provision of chicken egg subsidies for grades A, B and C if the supply recovers and stabilizes. Its minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the move to end the subsidy should be considered based on the successful end of the chicken subsidy which saved RM100 million a month. "Proposals have been submitted to the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, and are under consideration," he told reporters after the KPKM monthly meeting here today. Mohamad said the savings could be used to develop other urgent agro-food sectors. According to him, the country has spent more than RM3 billion since February 2022 on chicken and egg subsidies, before the government implemented the termination of chicken subsidies on 1 Nov 2023 and witnessed the supply and price of chicken becoming more stable until now.
