The European Union is set to reinstate tariffs on Ukrainian sugar and eggs from Friday, pricing tariffs at 419 euros per ton for white sugar and 339 euros per ton for raw sugar, and an additional 30 cents per kilogram for eggs, in a move to protect its farmers using the 'emergency brake' mechanism. This decision comes after the EU's decision to remove all tariffs and quotas on Ukrainian food imports in June 2022, which led to an influx of Ukrainian goods overwhelming the local markets. The tariffs will be implemented on products that exceed the average import rates of 2022 and 2023, with oats, eggs, and sugar reaching such levels.
