In 2021, the European Union overtopped China as the leading buyer of Russian food products, marking a 41% increase from the previous year to $4.7 billion. This growth was largely due to higher prices of crabs and grain, while deliveries to China fell by 12% due to closed ports for Russian fish. Overall, Russian agro-industrial exports hit a record high, increasing by over 23% from 2020 to $37.7 billion. The exports to the EU were dominated by fish products and grain, with crab exports to the EU more than doubling. The increase in crab prices attracted consumers in the United States, and grain exports also saw a significant rise due to increased demand and the introduction of an export duty by Russia.
