Young apple orchards with irrigation systems in Hungary have been resilient during the drought, maintaining production at 100% for Hungarian table apples. However, older orchards have seen significant drops in production, leading to challenges for industrial processors. The article highlights the decline in Hungarian apple cultivation for industrial purposes, with a shift towards quality production. The quality of Hungarian apples is equivalent to those of Italy, Austria, and Germany, but the country lacks the quantity for large-scale exports. Poland, currently Europe's largest apple producer, is experiencing economic limitations, leading to a surge of Polish apples in Hungarian markets. Ferenc Takács, vice president of the Hungarian Fruit and Vegetable Association (FruitVeB), urges consumers to support Hungarian apples, emphasizing their quality and the benefits of local production. The article also notes the increasing trend towards fruit and vegetable consumption for a healthier lifestyle in Hungary.
