The Fisheries Agency expands scientific survey quotas for Antarctic toothfish.

Antarctic toothfish (pictured) scientific research to be significantly expanded. The National Institute of Fisheries Science announced on the 1st that it will conduct scientific research on Antarctic toothfish in the 88.3 and 48.6 sea areas of the Antarctic Ocean, which are managed by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) in 2026. In particular, the scientific research quota for the 88.3 sea area has been expanded by 213% compared to the previous year, totaling 438 tons. This expansion of the quota is the result of the systematic accumulation of Antarctic toothfish resource evaluation and ecosystem-based resource management data through scientific research conducted by the Institute over the past 10 years in the 88.3 sea area, in collaboration with Ukraine, New Zealand, and the distant-water fishing industry, and the recognition of these achievements by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea.
