Starting from January 1, 2026, establishments that choose to use a U.S. origin statement on FSIS-regulated products must maintain and provide the agency with access to documentation that demonstrates the product meets the regulatory criteria for the use of the statement. On March 18, 2024, the FSIS published the final rule "Voluntary Labeling of FSIS-Regulated Products with U.S. Origin Statements," which modified the regulations to define the conditions under which labeling of meat and poultry products can carry voluntary label statements indicating that the product is of U.S. origin. The final rule also clarified the requirements for voluntary state of origin statements. However, the FSIS noted that, starting in January, it will initially focus its verification efforts on the statements "Product of U.S." and "Made in U.S." The FSIS indicated that it may issue additional instructions for state of origin statements in a future revision of the directive.
