The Government has estimated that around 14 meat industries in the province of Barcelona may be affected by the blockage of pork exports to China (Spain's main client), following the detection of the first two cases of African swine fever (ASF) in Spain since 1994. The Director General of Health for Agro-Food Production and Animal Welfare, Emilio García, assured in a meeting with journalists that they are waiting for China to approve the activation of the bilateral protocol signed between both parties to maintain exports to that country. The Chinese authorities confirmed two weeks ago that they will accept regionalization (disease control in delimited areas) in case ASF cases are detected in Spain, although they will not be able to export from farms located within the province where the outbreaks are found.
