The new Moroccan government, led by Aziz Akhannouch, plans to gradual lift subsidies on gas, sugar, and flour starting in 2022 as part of economic reforms to reduce government spending and liberalize prices. The 2022 budget allocated 16 billion dirhams for subsidies on butane gas, sugar, and flour, with butane gas subsidies alone costing 9.9 billion dirhams in the first three quarters of 2021. The government aims to phase out subsidies in stages, with complete liberation of butane gas expected by 2024.
