Russia: The grain terminal in Vysotsk was the first in the Baltic to receive a cargo of wheat via inland waterways

The deep-water grain terminal at Port Vysotsky LLC, located in the Leningrad Region of Russia, has received its first shipment of wheat via inland waterways, marking a significant expansion for Russian grain exports. This shipment, transported by the motor ship POLA MARIA from Sviyazhsk, Republic of Tatarstan, through the Volga-Baltic waterway, signifies a crucial step towards enhancing logistical efficiency and international competitiveness. Despite challenges such as weather conditions and sanctions, Port Vysotsky anticipates exporting up to 1.3 million tons of grain, mainly from Russia and Kazakhstan, to various countries including Latin America, Africa, and the Asia-Pacific region by the end of the year. This development not only improves the export capabilities of the region but also offers a more sustainable and less infrastructure-intensive alternative to rail transport. The terminal, which started operations in 2023, is designed to handle all types of grain and is expected to receive up to 0.5 million tons of grain per year from the middle and upper Volga regions once the Gorodetsky hydroelectric complex reconstruction is completed in 2026.
