In 2024, the Tokaj wine region faced challenges due to extreme weather conditions caused by climate change, as reported by local winemaker Attila Orsolyák. The season started off well with adequate rainfall and warm temperatures, but later experienced high temperatures, heavy rains, and hailstorms in the summer, leading to significant crop losses. Despite these setbacks, the early harvest resulted in high-quality dry wines, although the vintage was not ideal for naturally sweet wines due to a lack of botrytization. Orsolyák stressed the importance of innovation and adaptability in response to these challenges, suggesting the cultivation of heat and drought-resistant local varieties such as furmint and linden, and the adoption of new practices like irrigation, shading, and mulching.
