The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forests in Morocco has announced a month-long biological rest period for sardines starting from January 1, 2023. This decision, aimed at protecting sardine stocks from depletion, includes the suspension of sardine fishing activities in the Central Atlantic trap and the southern Atlantic fishery throughout January. The ministry will monitor the effectiveness of this measure and may adjust the rest period based on the sardine population. This initiative was prompted by reports of sardines in reproduction, with a group of sea professionals and companies in the port of Tan-Tan calling for a halt in fishing to ensure the sustainable management of fish stocks.
