The Netherlands is establishing a vaccine bank to prepare for a potential outbreak of lumpy skin disease (LSD). The first infections were recorded in Italy and France last summer. Since then, the number of outbreaks there has increased sharply – Paris reports 79 already cleared farms due to LSD, and Rome reports 67. This was revealed in a letter from the Dutch Minister of Agriculture to the Dutch Parliament. To limit the spread of the disease in animals, emergency vaccinations have been initiated in France and Sardinia. Vaccinations are also being carried out on farms in Switzerland and Italy within the restricted area of France. The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) has begun tracking high-risk shipments from affected areas to the Netherlands, reports nieuweoogst.nl.
