The number of sheep in Russia has decreased by approximately 4 million, or 16%, since 2015, according to Mikhail Yegorov, general director of the National Union of Sheep Breeders. The majority of this decline happened in the past year. Despite this, Dagestan is showing positive growth in sheep breeding, contributing half of the region's mutton for slaughter. However, the union has identified significant losses in wool and wool-meat sheep breeding due to lower profitability, and is calling for a strategy to support the development of sheep breeding in Russia. This discussion is being furthered in a two-day forum in the Stavropol Territory.
