(Jeonju=Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Jin-bang = The Rural Development Administration (RDA) unveiled the new domestic wheat variety 'Hanbaek' for cotton use at the Hanmaeum Farming Corporation in Buyang-myeon, Gimje City, North Jeolla Province, on the 30th.
At the sowing ceremony and product launch event held on the same day, the characteristics and excellence of Hanbaek were introduced in detail.
Developed in 2023, 'Hanbaek' has a protein content of 10.8%, making it suitable for the production of noodles and ramen (gravity-separated flour). It is highly regarded for its excellent dough stability and extensibility (the property of dough to stretch), which ensures that the noodles are elastic and chewy.
Hanbaek is resistant to cold and lodging, ensuring high cultivation stability, and it matures quickly, making it suitable for double cropping.
The yield is 5.48 tons per hectare, which is 9% higher than the previous variety 'Geumgang'.
The RDA has established a system that integrates the production and sale of Hanbaek in connection with the wheat valley project. Farmers will supply high-quality raw wheat to milling companies through contract farming, while milling and processing companies will produce and distribute domestic wheat products. This is expected to create a stable demand base for domestic wheat, contributing to regional economic revitalization and strengthening the national food self-sufficiency system.
Gwak Do-yeon, Director of the National Institute of Crop Science, said, "Improving the domestic wheat self-sufficiency rate is directly related to national food security," and added, "We will actively support the development of varieties that meet consumer preferences and connect the field with the industry to ensure the establishment of the domestic wheat industry."
