EU olive oil production decreased significantly in the 2022/23 season due to adverse weather conditions, with Spain and Italy being the most affected. This has led to a rapid increase in global olive oil prices, with the price of extra virgin olive oil from Andalusia increasing by 115% in a year. The spread of the deadly pathogen Xylella fastidiosa in Europe, affecting olive trees in Italy, Spain, France, and Portugal, has also contributed to the increase in the cost of olive oil to consumers.
