The Spanish tuna fleet has achieved a significant milestone by obtaining Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification for its tropical tuna catches, including the Eastern Pacific bigeye stock, making it the first global fishery to certify all tropical tuna stocks in the Pacific Eastern and Western regions. This brings the total number of stocks certified to 9 out of 12, covering 312,000 tonnes of the fleet's annual catch of 370,000 tonnes, or 7% of the global tuna production. The certification underscores the fleet's commitment to sustainable fishing practices, with a focus on well-managed stocks, minimal environmental impact, and rigorous fishing controls. The MSC praises the fleet's data collection system, active research, and efforts to mitigate the impact on non-target species, highlighting the fleet's adherence to a Code of Good Practices and the use of environmentally friendly Fish Aggregating Devices.
