A report from Lincoln, Buenos Aires, has been confirmed by the National Service of Agrifood Health and Quality (Senasa) to involve a case of a misidentified snail, not a Giant African Snail as initially suspected. The correct identification was made as the 'white snail' (Megalobulimus sp.), a native Argentine species known for its large size and shell shape similarities to the Giant African Snail, but with significantly different reproductive capabilities. This discovery highlights the importance of accurate identification to support conservation efforts for native species like the white snail, which faces threats due to its similarities to the highly reproductive and invasive Giant African Snail.
