The start of mass harvesting of walnut kernels for export in Moldova has been delayed, with the first large batches not formed as expected in mid-October. Market operators are making small purchases of extra light varietal walnut kernels from specialized farms at high prices, but it is not yet clear what export traders will pay for nuts harvested from household plots and windbreaks. Moldovan traders claim that their European partners are not yet ready to buy dry walnut kernels for more than 5 euros/kg in the EU, and some large Moldovan walnut producers plan to independently export products in small consumer packaging to European retailers.
