Hungary is the fourth largest producer of rabbit meat in Europe, with two domestic slaughterhouses processing nearly 4.3 million rabbits in 2021, which is about 3.5% of the total European production. The country's rabbit farms breed only Hungarian-born rabbits, with a domestic population of 100-105 thousand mother rabbits. Despite the health benefits of rabbit meat, per capita consumption in Hungary is low at 0.2 kg per year. The government is urging consumers to consume more rabbit meat to support the domestic rabbit breeding industry, which is facing challenges such as increasing feed prices and stricter animal welfare standards.
