Climate change has made its impact felt relentlessly in Europe this year. While in Hungary, drought has made life difficult for farmers, elsewhere, abundant rainfall has hindered agricultural work. The rainfall shortage in Hungary, which was dubbed the drought of the century in 2022 due to truly unprecedented summer heat, has been followed by more difficult years for domestic crop growers. The autumn-sown cereals produced acceptable yields, but corn performed poorly in 2024 and disastrously in 2025 after an average 2023 season. This year's average yield of 1.8 t/ha in Békés County fell short of all expectations. Except for the western part of the country, successful corn cultivation has proven to be a huge challenge in much of Hungary this year.
